In vitro fertilization is a multi-step treatment designed to result in conception. The treatment is specifically designed for women that experience infertility.
While the full IVF process involves multiple steps, the core component consists of eggs being collected from a female’s ovaries, fertilized by a male’s sperm, and then implanted into a female’s uterus.
Beyond this common element, each step of the IVF process can vary based on the unique details of each situation.
IVF Process: Step-by-Step
Even though the IVF process can change based on individual factors, many of the steps in the process remain the same.
Listed below are the common steps involved in the in vitro fertilization process.
The first step of IVF involves preparing the eggs for fertilization. This step is often referred to as ovary or ovarian stimulation. Over a period of 10-12 days, the ovaries are stimulated in preparation for the next steps. Once the eggs are confirmed to be ready for retrieval, the next step can take place.

Embryo Monitor and Transfer
Fertilized eggs are regularly monitored over the next few days to validate embryo development. Once development is confirmed (typically on day 5 post-fertilization), one or two healthy embryos are transferred to the patient through a simple in-office procedure that doesn’t require sedation. A pregnancy test confirming the success of the fertilization and transfer is completed after 12 days.
An optional step in the process, cryopreservation is available if there are any remaining embryos of acceptable quality. If so, the patient is given the option to store these for future use.
In Vitro Fertilization Success Rate
The success rate of in vitro fertilization is a highly discussed topic in the overall IVF conversation.
According to CDC’s 2018 data on Assisted Reproductive Technology (which IVF is included in), the success rate is approximately 24%.
This number can seem discouraging on the surface, so it’s worth noting some key points.
